BANANAS FOR AVOCADOS!

The one I cannot live without!  I have recently been head over heels for this green superfood!  I love love love eating avocados every single day.  And I know they do everything they claim to because I can see and feel the difference on the days I miss my daily dose of this green gem!

So what makes avocados a miracle food, you ask?  Well, lets see…

Heart + Brain

Avocados contain monounsaturated fat- the good fat!  Studies have found that consuming monounsaturated fat boosts brain function, lowers bad cholesterol, and improves heart health.  As an added bonus, the skin is visibly soft and supple!

Hair

Vitamins B and E present in avocados not only nourish the hair, but also work at the cellular level to promote hair growth and repair scalp damage.

Weight loss

The protein, monounsaturated fat, and water content in avocados leave you feeling satiated for longer.

Skin  (read: Anti-aging)

When exposed to the environment, our body produces free radicals which harm our skin cells.  Avocados contain antioxidants such as carotenoids, vitamin E and vitamin C that help protect against such damage. Vitamin E and C also provide anti-aging benefits and boost collagen that keeps our skin firm.

Pairing avocados or avocado oil with foods rich in carotenoids– such as orange, tomatoes, and other red fruits and veggies– increases their absorption in our body.  Carotenoids protect our skin from environmental havoc, prevent fine lines and wrinkles, and improve our skin’s texture.

Need I give you more reasons to stuff your face with this green goodness?  If you are a flavor and spice lover like me, you will also go bananas for avocados with the below recipe for an avocado spread- enjoy!

KHICHADI | DETOX | AYURVEDA SUPERFOOD

Detox. Liver cleanse. Weight Loss. Digestive track healing.  One food that does it all? KHICHADI!

Khichadi is not only a comfort food, but it is considered a COMPLETE MEAL according to Ayurvedic medicine which dates back more than 5,000 years.  The best part?  It takes less than 15 minutes to make!

Let’s get started!

Ingredients:

Pressure Cooker

1 tbsp Ghee (clarified butter)

1 tsp Cumin Seeds

1 tsp Mustard Seeds

6 cloves Garlic

1 Onion

1 tsp Turmeric Powder (or 2 inch fresh turmeric root)

1 pinch Asafetida (hing) optional

1/2 tsp Cinnamon Powder

2 tsp Salt

1/2 cup Mung Beans

1/2 cup Rice

3 cups Water (add more if you like a soup-like consistency)

Handful of chopped Cilantro

How To:

Turn the stovetop on medium setting and place the pressure cook on the stovetop.

Once the pressure cook is hot, add ghee.

When ghee has melted completely, add cumin seeds and mustard seeds and wait for them to pop (the sound resembles popcorn popping).

Once the seeds start to pop, add garlic and onions. Sauté until translucent.

Add cinnamon powder, turmeric powder, asafetida, salt and mix it well.

Add the mung beans and rice with 3 cups of water.

Place the lid on the pressure cooker, add the whistle, and turn the stove off when you hear two whistles (~10 mins).

Garnish with cilantro.

GET YOUR POSE ON!

Yoga- a practice for the mind, body, and soul!  I have only recently become a yoga addict.  I still remember those days when I would meet the crazy yoga-goers (yogis as they proudly called themselves) who guaranteed that my life would never be the same once I consistently practiced yoga.  I recall nodding in disbelief and going about my day.  I never was one of those people who spent hours at the gym, or even one for that matter.

Do I want to buy a gym membership, or more makeup?  You can all guess how that turned out, every.single.time.  My workouts consisted of following dance fitness experts on YouTube- convenient, effective, fun and free!  As I completed one of my dance workouts, YouTube automatically started playing the next suggested video- Total Body Yoga.  I was quite exhausted after my previous sweat session, so the chirping birds and the serene palm trees at the beginning of the video were a welcome interruption.  Something took over me- I walked over to the side of my shaggy rug and before I knew it the 40 minutes of yoga were up!

I felt incredible after the 40-minute yoga, and noticed a spring in my step the next day.  As I came home that evening, I turned to my workout buddy, YouTube, and pulled up Total Body Yoga by Shilpa Shetty– I couldn’t believe it!  That was the beginning of my yogi days, and now I am a proud yogi for life!  I can now attest to Yoga’s truly soulful and life-changing results for a fit body and a focused mind.  So what are you waiting for?  Get your pose on!
