Khichadi is not only a comfort food, but it is considered a COMPLETE MEAL according to Ayurvedic medicine which dates back more than 5,000 years.  The best part?  It takes less than 15 minutes to make!

Let’s get started!


Pressure Cooker

1 tbsp Ghee (clarified butter)

1 tsp Cumin Seeds

1 tsp Mustard Seeds

6 cloves Garlic

1 Onion

1 tsp Turmeric Powder (or 2 inch fresh turmeric root)

1 pinch Asafetida (hing) optional

1/2 tsp Cinnamon Powder

2 tsp Salt

1/2 cup Mung Beans

1/2 cup Rice

3 cups Water (add more if you like a soup-like consistency)

Handful of chopped Cilantro


How To:

Turn the stovetop on medium setting and place the pressure cook on the stovetop.

Once the pressure cook is hot, add ghee.

When ghee has melted completely, add cumin seeds and mustard seeds and wait for them to pop (the sound resembles popcorn popping).

Once the seeds start to pop, add garlic and onions. Sauté until translucent.

Add cinnamon powder, turmeric powder, asafetida, salt and mix it well.

Add the mung beans and rice with 3 cups of water.

Place the lid on the pressure cooker, add the whistle, and turn the stove off when you hear two whistles (~10 mins).

Garnish with cilantro.
