Dinacharya (Ayurvedic Daily Routine) to remain healthy and disease free: Nasya or Nasal Drops

If there is one practice that will be a part of my daily routine, also known as Dinacharya in Ayurveda, until my last breath is Nasya! I suffered for years from debilitating migraines, and thanks to the practice of Nasya migraines are forever gone from my life! It has been life-changing for me, and nothing short of absolute MAGIC!

What is Nasya?

Nasya is an Ayurvedic practice that involves administering herbal oils, Anu Tailam or Ghee, into the nasal passages. While there are several types of Nasya, in this post I’ll be speaking about Pratimarsha Nasya, the one that you can do on your own daily.

Nasya is rooted in Ayurvedic principles, which aim to balance the body’s doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) and maintain overall health.

How to Do Nasya?

While sitting or laying down (recommended), tilt your head back and administer 1-2 drops of Anu Tailam or Ghee into each of your nostrils. Take a few short inhales to help the oil go deeper. Keep your head tilted back for 1 minute, and done. You will feel incoming liquid in your throat, it is extremely important to spit out anything in your throat as we want to remove this from our body!

What are the benefits of Nasya?

  • Dosha Balance: Ayurveda believes that imbalances in the doshas can lead to various health issues. Nasya is used to balance the doshas, primarily targeting imbalances related to the head and neck region.

  • Cleansing and Detoxification: Nasya is thought to help remove excess mucus, toxins, and impurities from the nasal passages and sinuses. This cleansing action can promote better respiratory health.

  • Skin and Hair: regular practice, can reduce hair, fall, promote, hair, growth, and result in glowing skin.

  • Nourishment: Nasya can also nourish and lubricate the nasal passages, which may help with issues like dryness, congestion, or irritation.

  • Brain Health: In Ayurveda, the nose is considered the gateway to the brain. Nasya is believed to have a positive influence on brain function and mental clarity.

  • Specific Conditions: Nasya is often recommended for various conditions, including migraines (I can vouch for this personally - doing Nasya is the only thing that single-handedly cured my migraines!!!) sinusitis, allergies, vertigo, headaches, and certain neurological disorders. The choice of oils or substances used in Nasya can vary depending on the specific condition being treated.

What are the contraindications? Avoid Nasya during:

  • Menstruation

  • Pregnancy

  • Congestion

  • Hair wash days (1 hour before and after hair wash Nasya should be avoided)
