The Perfect Food Portion Size: Anjali

Have you ever wondered what is the perfect portion size for your meals, unsure of how much is just right? Let’s delve into the time-tested Ayurvedic practice of Anjali to guide us in measuring out the perfect portion of food to honor your body's needs and maintain balance in mind, body, and spirit.

What is Anjali?

Anjali is the measurement according to Ayurveda of the right amount of food to be consumed during each meal.

How to measure Anjali?

Bring both of your palms together in front of you. The amount of food that can fit in the two palms of your hands, that is just the right portion size for your meals. Overeating can lead to Ama, build up of undigested food that can lead to toxins in the body, and in turn cause disease. Hence, it is critical to be mindful to exercise portion control and maintain optimal digestion and assimilation.

Pro tips: Try to chew your food to the point where it has turned into liquid mush in your mouth before swallowing it. Once you feel 80% full, that is the signal to stop eating.

Enjoy the flavors the world has to offer, but remember the key is good digestive power and portion control aka Anjali. Bon apetit!
